Reports just came in of a massive explosion and gunfire in Rock Aden Airport, soon after Yemeni’s government plane carrying the new cabinet landed, from Saudi Arabia. According to Reuters, gunfire was also heard. Five people have died in the explosion, while twenty others were injured. The members of Yemeni new government were not injured in the explosion or gunfire and were quickly transferred to the Maasheeq presidential palace in Aden. The new cabinet was still in the plane when the explosion happened.

The cabinet members in the plane included Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik. Mr. Abdulmalik was inaugurated last Saturday as the new Prime Minister of Yemen. This was done in the temporary headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in the presence of President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.

Yemen has been in a state of war since 2014 when the Houthi militant group captured the capital city, forcing the President and Prime Minister to resign and flee to Saudi Arabia. The President was initially detained in his residence in Sana’a. After a month, he managed to escape to Saudi Arabia. During his transit to Saudi Arabia, he stopped in South Yemen where he did a televised address and claimed that the Houthi government is illegitimate. The Houthi group managed to capture most of the country. Saudi Arabia soon after the arrival of the President, started launching airstrikes in Yemen against Houthi positions which continues till this day.

Update: At least 22 have been killed in the explosion. It is believed that a drone might have fired a missile, and the drone have been downed during the attack. A spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, Col. Turki Al-Malki, said that the drone downing confirms that Houthi rebels were behind the attack.
