A preliminary 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck near San Marcos in Guerrero state on January 2, 2026, shaking Mexico City and disrupting President Claudia Sheinbaum’s press conference. Seismic alerts activated across central and southern regions, but no immediate injuries or damage were reported. The quake struck at a depth of 35km at 7.58am local time.
