For the first time since 1814, the US capitol was breached after a number of Pro- Trump supporters stormed the capitol. Back in 1814, the British attacked the capitol and burned it during the war of 1812.
The protests by Pro- Trump supporters turned sour when they managed to push through the barriers along the perimeter of the capitol on Wednesday, 1pm ET. Chaos soon followed. The protesters than faced riot police, where they attempted to push through them, albeit unsuccessfully. Around 90 minutes later, it was reported that several demonstrators managed to enter inside the US capitol, sparking chaos inside the building. Meanwhile, flash bangs were heard near the steps of the capitol.
When the protesters stormed the capitol, Republican lawmakers were in the process of objecting the election results on behalf of Donald Trump.
Police inside the capitol drew their guns and locked down the capitol with the lawmakers inside. They asked the lawmakers to lay down, while they were assessing the situation and guarding the entrance. Several members of the congress texted their families to say they are safe. A number of house members were moved between capitol buildings among the chaos. At around 5:40pm ET the US capitol was secured. Four people died in the clashes.
Congressional leaders were moved out of the Capitol complex shortly before 5pm ET. They were taken to Fort McNair, an army base which is the closest to the capitol in Washington. Donald Trump directed the National Guard to Washington. According to the Pentagon, the entire DC National Guard has been deployed to protect the Capitol.
Previously, President Donald Trump gave a speech at a rally on Wednesday afternoon where he said ‘We will never give up’. He still believes that election was taken from him and that he won by a huge margin. During the clashes, Donald Trump tweeted for his supporters to withdraw and pursue peace.
