Philippines is currently facing a potential natural disaster as the Mayon volcano is close to eruption. The Philippines government has begun forcibly evacuating residents near the volcano in anticipation of a possible violent eruption within weeks or days.
The area within a 3.7-mile radius of Mayon’s crater is supposed to be off-limits due to possible volcanic emissions, rockfalls, lava flows and other hazards. Unfortunately, many poor villagers ignoredball the risks and have built houses and tended farms in Mayon’s danger zone over the years.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has promised to provide aid to those displaced until the crisis ends. He stated that they are preparing and moving people away from the area so that they are ready should an eruption occur.
Mayon is considered to be one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines and it last erupted violently in 2018, displacing tens of thousands of villagers. The government has raised the alert level for the volcano after detecting an increasing number of rockfalls and at least two volcanic earthquakes in recent days.
The situation is being constantly monitored and authorities are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of residents in the area. More details to follow.
