Gang violence in Sweden continues. Late Wednesday, local authorities reported that an 18-year old man was shot dead in a busy sports ground in the south-west Stockholm suburb of Mälarhöjden. Just hours later, another man was killed while another was injured in a shooting in Jordbro, South of Stockholm.
In the early hours of Thursday, authorities reported yet another death. This time it was due to an explosion in Uppsala, West of Stockholm. A 25-year old woman lost her life, and police are treating it as a murder though the Swedish media believes that she was not the target. The explosion damaged five houses.
The Swedish broadcaster SVT said that the two latest victims brings the death toll from shootings to 11 in the month of September. Since the police started keeping statistics in 2016, this September has become the deadliest month for shootings. The escalation in gang violence is believed to be linked to a split within the Foxtrot gang.
In 2022 Sweden reported 391 shootings, 62 were fatal. In 2021, the country reported 45 fatalities due to gunfire.
