The attack by Hamas terrorists on Saturday 7th October 2023 was unprecedented in its scale and audacity. Hamas fighters infiltrated Israel through tunnels and crossed the border fence, armed with guns, grenades, and explosives. They targeted Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip, killing hundreds of residents and taking dozens of hostages. They also attacked Israeli troops and military bases, inflicting heavy casualties. The attack caught Israel off guard and sparked panic and chaos.
Israel responded with a declaration of war against Hamas last Monday, and launched a massive military operation to stop the attack and rescue the hostages. Israel mobilized tens of thousands of troops and around 300,000 reservists, and deployed tanks, artillery, helicopters, jets, and drones. Israel also carried out hundreds of air strikes on Gaza, targeting Hamas leaders, fighters, weapons, tunnels, and infrastructure. Israel said it was acting in self-defense and aimed to restore deterrence and security.
There are reports that Hezbollah, after firing at Israeli border posts, might attempt to aid Hamas, and might be readying up their soldiers to deliver a huge attack in Northern Israel. Israeli are moving patients from hospitals close to Lebanon and taking them to hospitals in the centre of Israel. Also, in response, United States sent the USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier in the Eastern Mediterranean to help Israel with whatever it needs and threatened Hezbollah that if they intervene, the US will attack them. There are also reports, but yet unconfirmed, that the Syrian army might also attempt to help Hamas, risking a further escalation which might lead to a huge Middle-East crisis.
Iran stated that any US interference in the war will be punished by attacking US bases in Iraq. Iran applauded Hamas killing of Israeli civilians and requested Israel to give Palestine their land back as it was before the 1967 Israeli-Arab war.
