A 7.0-magnitude earthquake strikes west of Xinjiang, China.

Moments ago, a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck 141 km west of New Aksu, Aksu Diqu, Xinjiang, China at a shallow depth of 27.4km. The earthquake struck on Tuesday morning 2.09am local time.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

The earthquake was felt by a huge number of people located close to the epicenter. Light to moderate damage expected. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Aykol (pop. 11,300) located 128 km from the epicenter, Karakol (pop. 70,200) 131 km away, and New Aksu (pop. 535,700) 134 km away.
