7.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Peru.

Minutes ago a powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck  San Juan de Marcona, Provincia de Nazca, Ica, Peru at a shallow depth of 60.2km.  The tremor was recorded shortly after midnight, at 12.36am local time.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

The quake was felt by everyone in the epicenter, and light to moderate damage is expected. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Acari (pop. 4,400) located 66 km from the epicenter, San Juan de Marcona (pop. 12,800) 92 km away, Minas de Marcona (pop. 15,500) 103 km away, and Nazca (pop. 23,600) 136 km away.

Tsunami risk is under evaluation.
