7.4-magnitude earthquake in Peru.

Moments ago a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Zamora, Cantón Zamora, Zamora-Chinchipe, Ecuador at a very shallow depth of 5km.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologis1ts review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on preliminary data, severe damage to infrastructure is expected in areas near the epicenter.  The town of Catamayo with a population of 19,000 people is closest to the epicenter, and likely experienced strong shaking.

Moderate shaking probably occurred in Cuenca (pop. 277,000) located 132 km from the epicenter, Pasaje (pop. 44,900) 151 km away, and Machala (pop. 198,100) 169 km away.
