The European Union fined Elon Musk’s platform X €120 million ($140 million) for violating transparency rules under the Digital Services Act (DSA), sparking outrage from the Trump administration and Musk himself.

EU regulators determined X breached DSA obligations on ad transparency and the “deceptive” blue tick system, which allegedly misleads users on verification and content visibility. The Commission highlighted three specific violations, marking a bold enforcement against Big Tech despite U.S. pushback. This online safety law aims to curb illegal content, but critics call it overreach stifling free speech.

U.S. officials decried the fine as “suffocating regulations” targeting American firms, with Vice President JD Vance and others vowing retaliation. President Trump, a Musk ally, has long bashed EU tech rules, amplifying calls for countermeasures amid his pro-business agenda. Musk labeled it “insane,” fueling viral debates on X about censorship versus safety.
