It seems that the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is very tense and dangerous again. Today Azerbaijan has launched a military operation against Armenian military positions. Azerbaijan claims that it is conducting “anti-terrorist” activities to restore constitutional order and disarm Armenian forces.

The armed forces of Azerbaijan have taken control of more than 60 positions of the Armenian army and destroyed up to 20 military vehicles, more than 40 artillery installations, more than 30 mortars, two anti-aircraft missile systems, more than six electronic warfare stations of the Armed Forces of Armenia. Azerbaijan used a combination of suicide drones and artillery in their attacks. Armenia have accused Azerbaijan of aggression and violation of the ceasefire agreement that was reached in 2020 with the mediation of Russia.

Azerbaijan have threatened to launch a large-scale operation in Nagorno-Karabakh if Armenian forces don’t surrender by tomorrow. There have been reports of fighting and air raid sirens in Stepankert, the main city of Nagorno-Karabakh. The Ombudsman of Karabkh have said that there are 25 dead and 138 wounded as a result of shelling by the Azerbaijani army.

This is not the first time that Azerbaijan and Armenia have clashed over Nagorno-Karabakh. The region has been a source of dispute for more than a century, as it is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but has a majority Armenian population who have resisted Azerbaijani rule. The two countries fought a war over the region in the early 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and again in 2020, when Azerbaijan managed to recapture some territories that were previously held by Armenia. A ceasefire was brokered by Russia, which deployed peacekeepers to guard the only road linking Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia, known as the Lachin corridor. However, since December 2020, Azerbaijan has blocked this route, creating a humanitarian crisis for the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.
