Authorities reported that 10.4 million Venezuelans voted in the non-binding referendum regarding Guyana’s Essequibo region. This represents a voter turnout of just 50%. Unfortunately, the referendum passed. The National Electoral Council (CNE) President Elvis Amoroso said that all five referendum questions had between 95-98% of yes votes. Venezuelan’s President Nicholas Maduro said that the victory is decisive and the territory must be reclaimed.

Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali said that the Guyanese people have nothing to be afraid and that his government is doing its utmost to keep its borders safe. There are no reports of any movement of Venezuelan forces. Hopefully, as Brazilian’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said from Dubai, where he is attending the COP28 environment conference, ‘I hope good sense prevail.’
