China’s third and most advanced aircraft carrier known as the Fujian is nearing completion as it is undergoing tests and sea trials. The 1,037 foot (316m), 80,000 ton supercarrier is scheduled to join the Chinese military in 2025. It is a type 003 class carrier.

This aircraft features a so-called CATOBAR system (Catapult Assisted Take-off Barrier Arrested Recovery), a system which is not present in the previous two aircraft carriers. This system will allow China to launch a bigger variety of jets faster from the Fujian aircraft carrier and also with more ammunition.

A few months ago military enthusiasts noticed that the covers had been removed from all three advanced electromagnetic catapults on the deck of the supercarrier suggesting take off tests. The carrier is expected to operate the J-35 figher jet, a fifth generation stealth jet, which is a variant of the Shenyang FC-31 Gyrfalcon. This jet is expected to compete with the US F-35C fighter jet.

Construction on the aircraft carrier started in 2010 and was launched in June 2022. It has been undergoing tests and sea trials ever since.
