Taiwan has introduced water rationing and released emergency reserves for household use through July after western Taiwan suffered its driest winter in 75 years.
Reservoirs south of the Hsinchu-Yilan line received only 7 to 37 percent of the rainfall recorded during the same period last year, creating serious shortages in key industrial regions including Hsinchu and Taichung. The government has responded by diverting water from less affected areas, cutting household water pressure overnight, and encouraging factories to reduce consumption by up to 7 percent.
Officials said previous conservation and transfer measures have already added significant supply, helping avoid harsher restrictions for now. Longer-term plans include new pipelines and desalination plants in Hsinchu and Tainan. Premier Cho Jung-tai urged industries, farmers, and households to conserve water together.
