Multiple explosions at a fireworks factory in China’s Hunan province has killed 26 people and injured 61 others, according to news reports today. The explosion happened at the Huasheng fireworks manufacturing facility in Liuyang, central China.
Reports claimed the explosions occurred on Monday afternoon at about 4:43 p.m.. Emergency crews immediately attended to the site. Authorities evacuated people within a 3-kilometer radius because of the risk of further blasts. Around 480 emergency personnel were mobilized, and rescue teams used drones, search dogs, and robotic units during the operation.
Extreme damage was reported. State media and international outlets reported that seven people were pulled from the rubble, while nearby buildings were also affected by the force of the explosion. Two gunpowder storage sites inside the factory created major hazards for rescue workers increasing fears of more explosions.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the blast. The person in charge of the company has reportedly been detained by police. President Xi Jinping called for a full investigation and said those responsible must be held accountable. Officials also said they were monitoring local air and water quality after the explosion, with early checks showing environmental indicators within normal ranges.
The incident has renewed concerns over industrial safety in China’s fireworks sector, especially in Liuyang, an area well known for fireworks production. The area has witnessed deadly factory accidents before.
