According to local news, North Korea fired 200 artillery shells into the sea near Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeongdo islands. South Korea immediately ordered its citizens from the islands to seek shelter. The order of emergency evacuation was given between 12:02 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. local time on Friday.

South Korea said that the shelling did not cause any damage or casualties as they all fell on the northern side of the sea border known as the Northern Limit Line (NLL). Lee Sung-joon, a spokesperson for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said that this is an act of provocation that threatens peace on the Korean penisula.

In response to North Korean shelling, South Korea conducted a military drill on Friday afternoon to ‘respond to North Korea’s provocation of shooting artilleries inside the no-hostile act zone this morning.’

Back in November 2010, North Korea targeted and shelled the Yeonpyeong island resulting in the deaths of two south korean marines and two civilians.
