The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that ‘we are in a pre-war era’ during an interview with a group of European news media. He further said that he is not trying to terrify the European population, but that the reality is that war is no longer a ‘concept from the past’, and it is ‘real and started two years ago.’ This comes days after a Russian cruise missile entered Polish airspace for a few moments before turning back and attacking western Ukraine. Polish forces scrambled fighter jets in response.

Donald Tusk continued by saying that Europe must step up their defense investment. He also said that ‘every scenario is possible’.

I know it sounds devastating, especially to people of the younger generation, but we have to mentally get used to the arrival of a new era. The prewar era.

Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of Poland.

Poland is worried about Russian attempts to continue its invasion westward, and have started investing heavily in the military. Poland invests 4% of its GDP in its military, and Donald Tusk has urged all European countries to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense, the minimum requirement for NATO.

Today, Polish President Andrzej Duda signed a law suspending the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) as a response to Russia’s withdrawal from the treaty last year. The treaty signed in Paris on November 19th, 1990 was aimed to limit the amount of military equipment in Europe of both the NATO and Warsaw Pact forces. It encompassed five categories of conventional armed forces: battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery, combat aircraft, and attack helicopters. There were limits on each of the category to put both sides on equal footing and to prevent “blitzkrieg-type offensives”. Russia has failed to abide its CFE Treaty obligations since 2007, up till its withdrawal on November 7th, 2023.
