Baltic Sea Lifeline SNAPPED: Poland-Sweden Cable Cut—War Drums Beat Louder?

Last year, Finnish authorities took control of the Fitburg which was enroute from Saint Petersburg, Russia to Haifa, Israel. The freighter was escorted to the port of Kantvik after it damaged an undersea cable. Image Credit: MKFI, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons
Today, February 13, 2026, the vital undersea power cable linking Poland’s SwePolLink to Sweden’s power grid seems to have been disconnected in the Baltic Sea. This 550km beast, pumping 600MW since 2000, just went dark, but Polish Energy Networks (PSE) have already ruled out sabotage, and instead blamed it on a malfunction. According to Polskie radio, preparatory work is underway.
This incident isn’t isolated. It is third Baltic infrastructure affected in months, and Baltic countries are suspecting that Russia’s shadow fleet might be involved in some of the damages. Finland has stepped up its game, and claimed that it will improve surveillance of undersea infrastructure. This will be done in cooperation with other Baltic Sea states and forms part of European Commission’s plan to boost security of telecom data and infrastructure.
