Turkey has issued a NAVTEX (navigational telex) to Greece that it will carry a live- fire military exercise in the East Mediterranean Northeast of Cyprus. The military exercise will be carried out between 1st and 2nd September.
‘Turkey’s recent NAVTEX alert on gunnery drills has to do with security and safety off the coast of Iskenderun in the East Mediterranean,’ a Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said to Anadolu Agency (AA).
Tensions run high between Greece and Turkey over a disputed zone in the Eastern Mediterranean with potential reserves of oil and gas. Turkey has been sending its seismic research vessel Oruc Reis escorted by warships in the disputed area with Greek warships in the vicinity.
Last Tuesday, Turkey conducted a military exercise in response to Greek military drills in the disputed area. Turkey firmly believes that Greece has no rights in the disputed area, since they do not believe that islands should be considered in the calculating the sea boundaries between Greece and Turkey.
