A Colombian military aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff today near Puerto Leguízamo, a remote municipality in the southern department of Putumayo, according to Colombian officials and multiple media reports. Early statements said the aircraft was a Hercules C-130 transport plane and that emergency crews were deployed quickly, but authorities had not yet confirmed a final casualty toll or the cause of the crash at the time of writing.
Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez described the incident as a tragic accident and said rescue units were responding in the area. Reports placed the crash site in Colombia’s Amazon region near the borders with Peru and Ecuador, which can make emergency access and recovery work more difficult.
Some early reports said the aircraft may have been carrying around 110 people, possibly soldiers, but that figure had not been fully confirmed by official authorities in the material available so far. For that reason, it is important to treat the passenger count and early casualty claims with caution until the Colombian government or armed forces release a verified update.
Update: 90 soldiers dead so far
