Catalan party declares victory.
The Catalan parties have declared victory with over 98% of the votes counted. The trio of political parties which supported secession from Spain are: Junts per Catalunya (JxCat), the Esquerra Republicana (ERC) and the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP). The snap election which was called on by the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in late October, was in response to the illegal referendum held on the 1st of October. This was followed by a police crackdown on the voters and the removal of Carles Puigdemont- who held the position of president of Catalonia- from office by the government.
Carles Puigdemont, the leader of the Junts per Catalunya, claimed that he would return back to Catalonia if they won. His political party along with the other 2 pro-independence parties secured 70 seats out of the 135 seats in Catalonia’s parliament, giving them an absolute majority.
