Boris Johnson has threatened the German chancellor that he might walk away from trade deal after her comment. The UK is prepared to leave the EU on ‘Australia terms’. Australia has no trade deal, but a number of mini-deals.
Merkel told six European newspapers, ‘With Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the British Government wants to define for itself what relationship it will have with us after the country leaves’.
‘It will then have to live with the consequences, of course, that is to say with a less closely interconnected economy,’
‘If Britain does not want to have rules on the environment and the labour market or social standards that compare with those of the EU, our relations will be less close,’ Merkel said to the newspaper, The Guardian.
The UK can extend its transition period to 2021, but can request it until 1st July, though Mr. Johnson will most likely reject the offer. EU’s negotiator will be Michel Barnier , while David Frost will be negotiating for the UK.
Mr.Frost already warned the EU that any attempt to take advantage of the British law, to slap them with tariffs, will be blocked.
Mr Barnier said that a deal is possible, given, the UK is ready to compromise, as EU is ready to do, if need be.
