On Friday morning local time, the US aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower transited through the Suez canal with its strike group (IKE strike group), days after the canal was opened after being blocked by the massive container ship Ever Given for a week. On Saturday, the Eisenhower strike group arrived in the Middle East, US 5th Fleet announced.

We appreciate the Government of Egypt and Suez Canal Authority’s efforts to ensure the safety of navigation in this critical waterway for all ships, and in allowing the IKE CSG to transit so quickly.

Vice Adm. Samuel Paparo, Commander U.S. Naval Forces Central Command.

The Eisenhower strike groups forms part of the anti-ISIS operation, known as Operation Inherent Resolve. It conducted several air missions along with Carrier Air Wing 3 from the Eastern Mediterranean earlier this week. The arrival of the IKE strike group in the Red Sea is a first, since the Nimitz carrier strike group left the area back in January.

According to a report released by Wall Street Journal, the Pentagon wants to relocate its three Patriot missile defense batteries that have been staying in Saudi Arabia in 2019. The US wants to focus its military to the Pacific as the prospect of a conflict increases.
