Hours ago, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake was reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake struck in the North Pacific Ocean, 82 km southwest of Chinandega, Nicaragua at a depth of 22km.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be changed again later on as seismologists review their data and calculations, or else as other agencies issue their own reports.

Based on preliminary reports there was no major damage or reports of injuries. A tsunami warning was not issued. The earthquake was felt in neighbouring Central American countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Belize, Honduras and Guatemala.
