Just an hour ago, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Bismarck Sea, 153 km northwest of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea at a shallow depth of 10km. We have also received reports of an aftershock of 5.0-magnitude striking the same area just minutes ago.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be changed again later on as seismologists review their data and calculations, or else as other agencies issue their own reports.

The earthquake and the aftershock did not cause any significant damage, but was widely felt by people living close to the epicenter. In Kavieng (pop. 14,500) located 109 km from the epicenter weak shaking was reported.
