Major magnitude 7.0 earthquake hits New Caledonia.

Minutes ago a major earthquake of 7.0- magnitude struck New Caledonia: Southeast of Loyalty Islands at a shallow depth of 10km.

This occurred just a few minutes ago, so the exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be changed again later on as seismologists review their data and calculations, or else as other agencies issue their own reports, but it is unlikely.

We have no information yet about any tsunami threat. The closest towns and cities include Tadine, Isangel, Mont-Dore, Noumea and Dumbea. These are more than 200km away from the epicenter and for this reason shaking might not have been strong. Also, the region where the earthquake struck is sparsely populated across the hundreds of Islands.
