Yesterday satellite imagery captured Russian navy cruiser formation in the Ionian Sea. It is unknown why the two Russian navy cruisers were in the Ionian Sea. The Russian Navy cannot access the Black Sea from the Mediterranean Sea since the Bosphorus Strait has been closed to all Russian warships by Turkey by implementing the Montreux Convention.

The closest Russian port is in Tartus, Syria where satellite imagery have captured several Russian warships doing routine patrolling in the area. The ships in the area are believed to be protecting their Black Sea warships. Four weeks ago several Russian warships approached Crete, most likely due to an accident on board of one of the vessels. It is not known why the two Russian cruisers went as far as the Ionian Sea.
