The Chinese navy sent the guided-missile destroyer Suzhou, which is known to have enough upgrades to match US Navy’s Arleigh-Burke class warships, and the frigate Nantong which has medium-range air defence capability on its first escort mission in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia.
On the Social media of the Eastern Theatre Command, the warships are sailing with the 41st fleet of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy that left the port of Zhoushan, in east China’s Zhejiang last Wednesday.
Their role is to fight off the pirates. The last time they sent warships to the area was in December 2008.
