Pakistan reported around 153 deaths due to the coronavirus on Saturday, with the total death toll reaching 3,382. Another 6,604 people contracted the virus raising the total number of cases to 171,666. This month alone, Pakistan reported over 90,000 COVID-19 cases. Despite the rise in cases, Pakistan will reopen the airports today, and resume international flights. Gwadar and Turpat airports will remain closed for the time being.
Health experts have warned that the rise in cases can crush the country’s fragile health system, if the number of new cases surges. Asad Umar, the minister for planning, warned that with the current trend of new cases, it is possible that by the end of July the number of cases in Pakistan will exceed 1 million.
