The former prime minister of France, Francis Fillon was found guilty of giving his wife a fake job as his assistant, netting her over €1 million. The French court sentenced Mr. Fillon 5 years in prison, three of which can be done in the community.  Adding to this, he will also be prohibited from running for election for 10 years, and must pay a €375,000 fine. His wife received the same amount of fine and she cannot run for election for 2 years.

The cases started in January 2017, when an investigation by Canard Enchaine, a French satirical newspaper, revealed the scandal, which ruined Fillon’s 2017 presidential bid.

Fillon served as a prime minister between 2007 and 2012.
