Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita announced his resignation on state television. This comes shortly after being captured yesterday along with the Prime Minister by mutinous soldiers.

The President was seen on state television wearing his mask, due to the ongoing pandemic, and announced his resignation three years before his final term.

‘I wish no blood to be shed to keep me in power. I have decided to step down from office.’

The United Nations will hold a closed meeting today to discuss the situation. UN has 15,600 peacekeeping soldiers in the country. The European Union described the situation as a coup attempt, and warned that this situation could potentially destabilise not only Mali, but the whole region.
