The Former Italian Prime Minister of Italy and President of Forza Italia Silvio Berlusconi, aged 83, has been admitted to hospital on Thursday evening, as a precaution, after he was found to be positive for COVID-19. His staff released a statement on Friday that Mr. Berlusconi ‘was hospitalized as a precautionary measure at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan after the appearance of certain symptoms. The clinical setting does not give cause for concern. Mr. Berlusconi’s partner and two children also tested positive for the virus.
The ex-PM and his partner, Marta Fascina along with their two children were in self-isolation at his villa in Arcore, after returning from a holiday in Sardinia. The rate of infection in Sardinia is higher than in Italy. The island saw a spike in cases in August. Mr. Berlusconi’s doctor, Alberto Zangrillo, described him as asymptomatic.
On Thursday, Mr. Berlusconi sent a message to his party members in Genoa saying, ‘ I’m continuing to work as best I can on the current election campaign.’ Several leaders sent a message of hope to Silvio Berlusconi. Matteo Salvini, the leader of La lega, tweeted ‘Best wishes for a speedy recovery and an affectionate hug to his friend Silvio Berlusconi.’ Giorgia Melloni, leader of the Brothers of Italy party tweeted ‘Best wishes for a speedy recovery from me and from the Brothers of Italy to President Silvio Berlusconi. He has shown that he is a lion many times: we are sure he will brilliantly overcome this too.’
Silvio Berlusconi was a controversial figure when he was Prime Minister. He has been convicted for tax fraud in 2013 and removed from the Italian Senate. His ban from public office was later revoked. He has been involved in numerous sex scandals, and in 2012 he went on trial, after Mr. Berlusconi paid an underage prostitute for sex in his famous ‘bunga bunga’ parties.
