The US aircraft carrier USS Nimitz transited through the Strait of Hormuz last Friday. The aircraft carrier is the oldest carrier in service and carries around 5,000 sailors.
This comes amid tensions between the US and Iran over the nuclear deal and the killing of Iranian general earlier this year. Iran responded to the killing by firing several ballistic missiles on an American military base.
The carrier was protected by other warships in a manevour that is considered to be routine. The Strait of Hormuz is considered to be one of the most important oil trading routes, and US warships frequently pass through it. The US always described its passage through the Strait of Hormuz as defensive in nature, and is only aimed to keep the trade route open.
The escalating tensions between the 2 countries, prompted Iran to carry out live fire exercises, targeting a mockup of a US aircraft carrier.
