On Friday, a massive fire engulfed the Tawfiqia market located in Al-Azbakeya district, downtown Cairo, destroying 15 shops. The Tawqifia market is one of the most famous in Egypt for car accessories. The damage caused by the fire was estimated to be over $1.2 million.
As soon as the fire broke out, fire fighters headed to the area. The Civil Protection department sent 13 fire engines and two water tenders. It took them several hours to extinguish the fire. The person that started the fire was arrested soon afterwards.
The person that initiated the fire disguised himself as a tuk-tuk driver, and as soon as he arrived in the market, he set fire to his cousin’s shop, which swept through 13 other shops. It is believed that the criminal started the fire after a dispute between him and his cousins over an under-construction store.
