On Tuesday, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced that its research vessel, TCG Çeşme research vessel was harassed by four Greek F-16 fighter jets, as it was carrying out a hydrographic scientific and technical survey in international waters. The research vessel was scheduled to conduct hydrographic study till March 2nd.
The vessel was targeted by the fighter jets off the island of Lemnos, and fired a chaff flare amid the maritime dispute between the two countries over the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The dispute over the EEZ in the Eastern Mediterranean has prompted Europe to calm the situation a few months ago. The area is known to have natural gas reserves. Both US and Europe supported Greece in the dispute. Greece has denied that it sent fighter jets to harass the research vessel.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said,
