Yesterday, the Royal Navy encountered a Russian submarine off Dorset coast, passing through the North Sea heading to the Mediterranean. Patrol ship HMS Mersey was tasked to monitor the movements of the submarine. The submarine will mosy likely arrive in the Mediterranean today, but it is possible that it is already here.

Mersey reported on the movements of the Russian Black Sea Fleet submarine, so that Nato allies could track her progress as she continued her onward journey.

The Russian submarine which surfaced during its voyage, is a Kilo-class diesel powered attack submarine RFS Rostov Na Don.

All of us in Mersey are very proud of the part we play, here in our home waters, in fulfilling the Royal Navy’s role of protecting our nation’s interests.

Commanding officer of HMS Mersey, Lieut Cdr Will Edwards-Bannon.

The Royal Navy has increased its watch over its seas since Brexit. The Royal patrol vessels monitor fisheries, but most importantly monitor military vessels that enter their sea.

This latest operation comes amid a busy time for the Royal Navy’s patrol ships, with Mersey and her sister ships HMS Tyne and HMS Severn all on maritime security patrols in the seas around.
