A new type of design for supersonic jets has just been unveiled. The new design of plane would have ‘gull wings’, and will take passengers from London to New York in 3.5 hours.
The aircraft is known as Boom Supersonic Overture aircraft and will travel at speeds of 2,100km/hr (Mach 1.7), similiar to speeds reached by the Concorde. The plane will fly at these speeds only over water as on land it is prohibited to break the sound barrier due to sonic booms. For this reason, the speed on land will be limited to 0.97 Mach.
The design of this new supersonic jet went through 51 design iterations since the inception of the programme in 2017. The Overture would accommodate between 65 to 80 passengers and if everything goes according to plan it will resume commercial flights in 2030. Along the way it reduced the number of passenger seats, added more engines to a total of four and added a new fuselage. The four small wing- mounted engines will allow the plane fly quieter and at a decreased operational cost.
More details to follow.
