On Sunday morning, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported that the captain of a merchant ship that was sailing off the coast of Yemen reported an explosion near the ship. At the moment of explosion, the ship was 85 nautical miles (157 km, 98 miles) east of Aden, an area known to be targeted by the Houthi rebels. The rebels often target ships that are linked with Israel or the United States as a way to show their sympathy towards Gaza.

The UKMTO said that all the crew are safe, and the merchant ship is sailing to its next port of call. The Houthi’s repeated attacks in the Red Sea on merchant ships have disrupted the global shipping industry. As a response, both the US and UK have launched airstrikes into Yemen in an attempt to stop the attacks. Yesterday, the US military destroyed a Yemeni’s drone while another one crashed into the sea on it own.

United States has the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) aircraft carrier in the Red Sea, which is being used to launch airstrikes inside Yemen.
