On Tuesday, China National Health Commission (NHC) reported 68 new cases, the highest daily number since April. This is worrying Chinese authorities and prompted them to issue new restrictions to prevent the second wave of infections. Chinese authorities reported on Tuesday, that 64 cases were locally transmitted. There were no deaths.
Around 57 cases were from the Northwest region of Xinjiang, where millions of people were tested and strict lockdowns were imposed to curb the spread of the virus. This puts the total number of cases since the outbreak began in the region to 235.
Another six cases were from the city of Dalian, Liaoning province, where a recent outbreak in a seafood processing plant occurred. Two cases were reported in Beijing, one of which was connected to Dalian and another was imported. In the Northeastern province of Jilian two new cases were reported.
China managed to curb the spread of the virus, and no cases were reported for several months, allowing businesses to reopen. This changed 2 weeks ago, after an outbreak in Xinjiang seems to be worsening, even though Chinese authorities imposed strict lockdowns and other measures to contain it, the virus still managed to spread to Kashgar , around 300km away.
China’s total number of cases is now 83,959 and 4,634 deaths. There are 391 people that are hospitalized.
