The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is set to resign on Tuesday, amid a surge in COVID-19 cases and a recession.
The Italian Prime Minister’s resignation is expected to bring political instability in the country, and the possibility of a snap election has escalated. The Prime Minister’s resignation comes a month after losing a majority in the Italian senate, over a fight how to distribute €200 million of a recovery fund offered by the European Union to help the Italian’s economy. The Prime Minister lost the senate majority after the ex-premier Matteo Renzi, leader of the Italy Viva party, withdrew from the coalition with Mr. Conte.
Mr Conte’s resignation prompted an intensive search for a new governing majority. If this is not done, Italy would have to hold elections in the coming months amid a pandemic that has devastated the country, and a worsening economy.
