At least two Chinese engineers have been attacked and critically injured near Gulbai bridge in the city of Karachi, Pakistan. In an isolated case in the same city, a Chinese national was also shot earlier after two masked men opened fire on him from their motorcycle. These attacks on Chinese people in Pakistan come two weeks after a deadly bomb attack killed nine Chinese engineers causing the bus carrying them to fall off the edge of the road into a ravine.
Two men wearing face masks riding a motorcycle carried out the shooting.
Police deputy inspector general Javed Akbar Riaz regarding the civilian man that was shot.
China is a huge investor in Pakistan, and the city of Karachi is home to several majorChinese-funded projects, but several terror groups in Pakistan disagree with the Chinese investment and have repeatedly attacked several Chinese citizens and projects. The investments include the construction of the Mainline-1 (ML-1) railway from Karachi to Peshawar, Dasu hydropower dam project, construction of a new hospital, a new international airport, a vocational institute and solving the water and power shortages in Gwadar, all of which form part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) – a $65billion investment plan. Also, two Chinese companies have been set up and will start mobile phone exports in 2022. China said that it is committed to help Pakistan geo-economically but also geopolitically.
Regarding the separate incident of the two Chinese engineers attacked, further verification is required. More details to follow.
