Tonga was hit by another earthquake less than an hour ago. According to German Research Centre for Geosciences, the earthquake struck in the South Pacific Ocean, 289 km south of Nukalofa, Nuku’alofa, Tongatapu, with a magnitude 5.1 and at a shallow depth of 10km.
The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be changed again later on as seismologists review their data and calculations, or else as other agencies issue their own reports, but it is unlikely.
Tonga was the site of a recent underwater volcano eruption back in 15th January 2022. The eruption was so huge that the plume reached half-way to space and was clearly visible from the ISS. Tonga is struck frequently by earthquakes. In fact, in the past 365 days, 236 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 1.5 were recorded. Today’s earthquake was felt as a weak shaking in Tonga.
