The Greek bulk carrier, Arch Gabriel, was reportedly attacked and boarded by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea. The Italian navy frigate Luigi Rizzo responded to a distress signal from the drifting bulk carrier. The Italian frigate responded and traveled in the direction of the bulk carrier, where when it approached it, a helicopter with special forces flew from the frigate to the bulk carrier. When the Italian special forces boarded the ship they found out that the pirates had already fled after they failed to enter the ship’s citadel.
All crew were released from the citadel and are all safe. The crew repaired the mechanisms and equipment damaged by the pirates. Arch Gabriel is now en route to Lagos, Nigeria with its Automated Identification System (AIS) on. According to the latest AIS, the Greek ship will reach Lagos soon.
