In an ever increasing maritime escalation between Russia and UK after the forceful removal of UK destroyer from Russian territorial waters in the Black Sea, Russia is now threatening that it will hit the ship if it happens again. On Wednesday, Russia fired high explosive bombs and also fired warning shots in an attempt to force UK destroyer out from their territotial waters.

The essense of the dispute is basically Crimea, which was illegally annexed in 2014 by Russia. Russia claims not just the land, but also the territorial waters around the Crimean penisula. The UK, like most of the international community does not recognize Crimea and Crimean waters as Russian, and therefore they believe that they are asserting their interpretation in a freedom of navigation operation.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov said that if UK repeats its warship operation in Russian waters, than it will actually hit the ship.

We can call people to respect common sense and international law, but if that doesn’t help, we can bomb not only the path [of a ship], but hit the target.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov

In his daily briefing, when speaking to journalists Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov, said that he is worried over UK’s intentions in the Black Sea, and that Russia would not rule out anything if UK’s navy keep attempting to trespass into Russian territorial waters.

More details to follow.

  1. “The latter was illegally annexed in 2014 by Russia”

Which is a very very loose definition of the term “illegal”. All the Russian troops did on Crimea was protecting the population during the referendum. The 80% Russian population of Crimea had quite enough of the broke, fascist Ukrainian gvmt and voted to return to the Union. It was a reunification. Simple as that.

    • How would you feel, if in a state where you live, would vote to be part of another country’s land, just because most of the population have come from that country? I understand that its a tactical move from Russia to have access to the Black Sea and Mediterranean, but it still remains illegal.
