On Monday morning the Iranian navy managed to thwart a pirate attack on an Iranian oil tanker which was enroute to the Gulf of Aden before having to enter the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
According to a statement released by the Iranian navy, the pirates launched the attack using four boats carrying between four to six pirates. Luckily, they were intercepted by the Iranian navy. The Iranian navy escort team fired warning shots at the pirates, forcing them to retreat.

It is not the first time the Iranian navy managed to foil attacks on oil tankers since it has been conducting patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008. Just last month, an Iranian warship foiled another pirate attack also in the Gulf of Aden following a heavy exchange of fire.
