A powerful explosion ripped through a residential neighborhood in Sanhe City, Hebei Province, Northern China. The suspected gas explosion killed two people and injured 26 others. According to local reporters, the explosion occurred before 8am local time at a ground-floor restaurant. Three buildings were heavily damaged, one of which was left in a skeletal state.

The ensuing fire took hours to be put out, and by Wednesday afternoon the fire was extinguished. A total of 500 people around the site had to be evacuated. Gas explosions are not uncommon in China due to lack of safety standards. Chinese market regulators are attempting to improve the standards and issued detailed guidelines on the use of gas cookers and appliances.

Update: 7 killed and 27 injured in the gas explosion at a fried chicken shop. An investigation has been launched.
