Huge fire erupts in a high-rise apartment block in Singapore.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that today at 8.30am loccal time it was alerted of a fire at the master bedrooms of the third, fourth and fifth floor. The block was located in Block 141 in Yishun Ring Road,Yishun, Singapore.

All residents living in the 10-storey apartment block self-evacuated, before the firefighters arrived. Video footage showed the flames engulfing the third, fourth and fifth floor. Upon the firefighters arrival, the fire was quickly extinguished, with three water jets. Another water jet was also used to suppress the fire near the bedroom windows.

Ten people, including a police officer, were injured in the accident and had to be taken to hospial due to smoke inhalation.

Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam upon arrival said that the fire started in a unit where an old woman lived. He said that the four units were the fire was raging were completely charred.

Thankfully, the damages are limited to these four units… Within six minutes (of the fire starting), the fire bikes from Yishun Fire Station were here and within another minute or so the fire engines were here… The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes.

The residents of the charred units were given temporary accommodation at the Chong Pang Community Centre, and temporary housing for these residents is being discussed by the Housing Development Board.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
