British Defense Ministry reported that an Israeli oil tanker M/T Mercer Street, was attacked while it was transiting the Gulf of Oman. The tanker belongs to Zodiac Maritime, a London-based company owned by Israeli tycoon Eyal Ofer. The attack seem to have occured on Thursday night near the Omani island of Masirah, but was reported today morning.
Not that much information about the attack has been shared so far. The British Defense Ministry launched an investigation to determine what happened during the attack and who might be behind it. Such attacks in the region are not uncommon, especially when it comes to Israeli and Iranian ships. Recently, an Iranian vessel was also attacked in the region amid ever increasing tensions between Iran and Israel. Tensions between the two have escalated over Iran’s continued uranium enrichment to build a nuclear weapon and over its involvement in supporting terror groups in Palestine, Lebanon and Syria. Israel seem to be doing its utmost to stop Iran from constructing a nuclear weapon. A number of fires and explosions in Iran have been attributed to Israel by the Iranian regime, even when there was no sufficient evidence. A cyber attack on Iranian’s nuclear plant a few months ago was also attributed to an Israeli cyber attack. Thousands of centrifuges were destroyed in the blackout.
Authorities from Oman did not acknowledge the attack and refused to comment about it. It is belived that US carrier strike group aircraft are currently airborne over the Gulf of Oman.
Update: Two people died in the suicide drone attack. One is from Britain and the other from Romania.
