Iranian authorities attempted to save the ship according to the Fars and Tasnim news agencies but to no avail.

All the crew of the ship were able to disembark safely. According to State TV, the ship, which was on a training mission when a blaze was reported on board around 2:25 a.m. and firefighters tried to contain it. Eventually the vessel sank near the Iranian port of Jask, located 790 miles southeast of Tehran in the Gulf of Oman and near the Strait of Hormuz. Agence France-Presse reported that Iranian firefighters fought the fire for 20 hours before it eventually sank.

It is yet unclear what caused the initial explosion and fire on the ship, but recently Iran have clashed with Israel in the Gulf of Oman, attacking each others’ ships. Two months ago Iran fired a missile towards an Israeli cargo ship in the Arabian Sea.
